how can resin go wrong?

Hello lovies!

if you are interested enough to find your way to the blog section of my website you might be interested in a little bit of why i do the things i do! I wanted to stop and give some warning about what might be wrong with resin before i gush in a later post!

Resin is a fickle medium. Done right it can elevate, preserve, and contain a piece beautifully. Done wrong it can destroy your artwork, adhere incorrectly, cost you tons of money, and make a gigantic mess.

Before I tell you why I love resin pouring here are some of the failings of resin.

  1. It can get really expensive. You have buy lots of resin to make it worth your time and money to really do it well which can cost you hundreds of dollars. Smaller bottles are fine if you don’t want to have to store your resin but will be paying way more per ounce.

  2. It can ruin anything it touches. Cover up your floors, clothes shoes, phone, EVERYTHING because it will either stay sticky forever or become one with the resin and you will never get that stuff out. If you get it in your jeans your only hope is that the ripped look is in style. I personally always wear the same thing and use Siri to set my timer so resin can’t hurt me.

  3. Its a chemical reaction that done wrong can ruin your time and work. If you do not stir the mixture long enough or leave it somewhere too humid it can stay sticky forever and you really can never fix that and all your hard work will be destroyed. Practice resin-ing over a tray or small piece you are not attached to first to make sure you know what you are doing.

  4. Resin pouring will change your work. On some paper it will saturate it just like water which can warp it, change the texture, and change the colors changing the entirety of the piece. Always photograph your work before and after for your records so you know what has changed and keep track of those changes.

  5. Oh bubbles, you need them but you hate them. If you resin right your piece will be covered with thousands of little bubbles. As much as you try not everyone will come out unless you babysit your piece all day long. I recommend starting early in the day, doing your dirty work. and coming by every few hours to check on your cure.

One day soon I will tell you why I love resin and why despite all these reasons I choose to torture myself with it but for now, you have been warned!
