Cleopatra was one of the most notable leaders of Egypt during the Ptolemaic Dynasty. She served as a co-regent to her father, brothers, and son during her time on the throne, but scholars credit her with knowing multiple languages, being well-educated, and having clever and strategic mindsets, which helped build alliances with surrounding kingdoms and empires.

The ornate, golden jewelry worn here depicts the strength and power that she had and brought to Egypt during her reign. The snake-headed diadem atop her head was the symbol of regency and royalty in Egyptian culture at the time, which is why snakes surround her in this portrait. The use of real jewel-appliques adds a realistic emphasis to the details told by historians.
